The indignity of fitness
I've been going running in hilly Montmartre every other day or so for a few weeks now. I hadn't been running at all since last summer in New Jersey when I hurt my knee so bad I had to stop for a few months (which turned into all of autumn and winter). The weather in Paris is finally absolutely amazing, and I love being outside and feeling like I'm not being lazy and old and fat.

The only thing I hate about going running is wearing normal-people clothes.

Here's me stretching before running, with no product in my hair and sporting the least-terrible of all the terrible sneakers and terrible gym clothes available down the street at Tati (basically France's K-Mart). Not shown: tiny orange iPod chock full of Marilyn Manson and Iggy Pop. You can see how the dead animals on the wall are so disgusted with my attire they can't even look at me.

This is my price for being in shape.

And here are a couple pictures I took in my Metro station the other day that didn't come out great but so what...

I really like this ad for some reason; the absurdity and silliness of it amuse me. I'm not sure what the sticker on the kid's mouth says.

Orange is my favorite color a great deal of the time. (Whenever my favorite color is not pink. Or black.) Everything near these chairs and tiles reads as orange, since they're so shiny, but the picture didn't quite capture that. Oh well.

If this guy can play tennis in this outfit, surely you can run in it:

The other day I was saying to someone, "If only I could just go running in a suit and tie..." and then suddenly I realized, wait, I CAN if I pretend someone's chasing me!

I wonder if it is possible to make a snappy suit out of 100% soft cotton and cut it in a way that would allow lots of movement. Who says Haute Couture can't be super comfortable and allow for all kinds of movement?

I hear that Fred Astaire had his suits custom tailored to allow for his crazy moves - surely Manning can have the same done.

Perfect. You just need to invent a few chase-scene scenarios and you're off to the races.

The clothes are what I hate about the gym most myself, too. It's the only time I ever wear real sneakers, and articles of clothing that start with the word "sweat". If I could figure out how to kickbox in high heels, that would RULE.

I find it completely crazy that you can go into the subway in a metropolitan area and actually allow your camera to leave the safety and comfort of your hands without the fear of it being instantly stolen.

Also, you are the hotness.

Aha! The station was empty and I put myself between the camera and the entranceway, and even then I felt a little nervous! That was a long ten seconds.

Thanks!

Oh dear God. Manning in striped gym pants ... I don't know what to say. Other than SO DISTURBING.

Tank top isn't bad, though. Why don't you get skinny black yoga pants?

I don't know how modest Manning is, but in my experience skinny black yoga pants are extremely junk-revealing. Which is why I love it when my boyfriend wears them. :D And why he won't wear them in public. D:

We are so on the same wave-length with this. I've been meaning to make a post about my recent adventures of going to the gym and how much I hate the clothes I have to wear and the general indignity of it all. Vanity is a bitch -- trying to balance caring about how your body looks vs. caring about how you look while caring about your body. I look like two different people when I emerge from the gym, which is mercifully hidden in a basement.

Normal people clothes create a nice breather between all the delightful outfits.

And besides, you have nice muscle-y arms, which is totally fun to look at.

(I really want to get back in the habit of swimming. I wish I knew how to afford it.)

I miss running. I traded up for weight lifting so I could fill out my skinny frame before I die. Then this morning I was all "awake" and "pumped" to go to the gym, and I pulled a muscle in my back during push ups that feels like it goes from my neck to my lumbars. Now there is like NO comfortable position doing anything.
I really miss running.
