French lessons, Nick Cave concert, et cetera
Two very important things I learned last night (completely unrelated to the Nick Cave concert):

  1. The French don't have the Tooth Fairy, they have "the little mouse." Otherwise, it's the same exact procedure here inre: tooth, pillow, cash. I still have no idea why a fairy or a mouse would want little kids' teeth.

  2. French cats only have seven lives, as opposed to nine lives for cats in the States. GOD BLESS AMERICA!

Anyhow, The Nick Cave show was great! Concert recaps are boring so I'll skip it for the most part. It was an amazing night, and I was no more than twenty feet from Dr. Cave for the whole show. He played a lot of guitar, surprisingly, and they mostly focused on faster, rocking, noisy songs. I usually prefer the sad/quiet/slow stuff, but it was okay, I was in the mood to rock. Papa Won't Leave You Henry was probably the hightlight of the night for me; they tore the house down with that one. Mick Harvey looks (more than ever) like somebody's dad hanging out with all these creepy rockers. And I miss Blixa. And Warren Ellis is downright amazing. Okay, that's enough.

Actually, cats only have 7 lives in most countries. I think Americans just wanted to make it clear that their cats were better and more extreme than everyone else's.

It totally made sense when I thought about how seven is a lucky number and all. I wonder where we got nine specifically.

The only answer I can find is from a yahoo answers page, which says, "It's from the cat-o'-nine-tails, a whip used in the early days of the British Navy. When the last 'tail' was worn out, the whip's 'life' had gone."

Nothing other than being his usual self. He played lots of guitar; weirdly, a tiny red mini guitar and tiny blue mini guitar. And violin, of course. The first time I saw him play was at a Bad Seeds show in New York around 2003(?) and he really made an impression on me.

I really, really enjoy the tidbits you share about our international differences!

Yay for Dr. Cave. Yep, he's definitely doing the Grinderman thing 24/7 nowadays, and much of that is Warren-influenced. Blixa brought far more to the sound we all knew and loved than most realized - many thought it was Mick, but it wasn't. And that's okay, too. As I said here -

Warren is quite simply The Most Beautiful Man in rock and roll and I like what he's bringing to the seeds. For now.

When French people yelled "NEECK CAVE!" at Nick Cave between songs (being ill-equipped to yell much else in English) he stopped and pretended to be very serious and corrected them that it's Doctor Cave.

Another thing, you know, Warren Ellis always faced the crowd when playing the guitar and always faced away when playing the violin. I think he doesn't want anyone to figure out how he manages to play with that beard in the way.

Yeah, you know, it would make more sense at least if like a serial killer or a crazy satanist took the teeth.

I think I'll start correcting people when they talk about a cat's nine lives. Seven makes 100x more sense!
