Les Égouts de Paris
My friend Andrea is an American student who's finishing up her time in Paris in a month or two, so she's made a project recently of taking in a bunch of Paris sights before she heads home, and she's been kind enough to invite me along for a lot of stuff. Hence our mostly-pointless trip to La Defense last week, wherein we were rewarded with a giant thumb. Yesterday, I joined Andrea for a tour of Le Musée des Égouts de Paris — that is, The Paris Sewer Museum.

Manning Leonard Krull (left), Jean Valjean.

Here's me, either just before or just after throwing the devil horns; the Paris sewers have never rocked harder than when we two glamorous Americans were down there. Something I should have thought of: the sewers are maybe not the best place for a germaphobe like me. My roommate Lada made fun of me before I went out yesterday, "You are wearing a suit and tie to the sewers?" Hey, it's all part of the plan.

It turns out the sewer tour winds around under Paris and spits you out in right in front of the Eiffel Tower.

(Note: That is a lie.)

Forgive my hair; we got rained on.

Listen, when you were at the Eiffel Tower, did you happen to see anyone selling little light-up replicas of it? Because I really wanted to get one while I was there but I just could never find any.

Do you have any idea how rare those are? Sorry pal, try eBay or Sotheby's or something.

Égouts! Hey, what was that Mod motto? "Clean living under difficult circumstances." You're on it, Manning.

Speaking of mods and France, we live right around the corner from an awesome little bar called Ne Nous Fachons Pas, if by any chance you're familiar with the film by the same name; I myself am not, but apparently it's about an army of mods, and then, like, stuff happens or something.

Hi,
I just wanted to say hi--I added you a week ago or so when I saw the Voynich Manuscript entry. I like your journal a lot!
I'm an American student in America, but I'll be studying French this summer and have signed a contract to read, write, and speak only French for six weeks. So starting at the end of June, my journal will be in French.

Thanks for leading an interesting life, and for writing about it so humorously.

Hello! I'm always delighted when anyone other than close friends and family find my posts interesting at all. Tu peux toujours ecrire des commentaires dans mon blog en francais si tu veux, mais tu vas voir tres vite que mon francais est la merde, meme pour quelqu'un qui habite la.

...how come we don't get the fake frenchy icon...? I've written poor french to you too!

...and I've only been in the catacombs there, which was fun in its way...

Babelfish translated that as saying, "...you will see very quickly that my French is the shit..."

That's Manning, always so full of himself.

J'ai l'impression que monsieur Krull a toujours une éventuelle traduction Babelfish en tête quand il écrit ses textes français.
