L'homme à tête de chou
In between errands today I hung out with (my friend Andrea and) Serge Gainsbourg.

Here's Serge's grave at the Cimitière du Montparnasse. Someone apparently left a cabbage in reference to the song/album L'homme à tête de chou. No relation to [info]petit_chou.

Serge's house, a couple streets below the river, due south of the Louvre. I don't think he was the one who decorated it like that. (It rained on us a bunch so my hair isn't as huge as usual. My apologies.)

Here is a wonderful song by Serge Gainsbourg back when he really had it goin' on.

And here are a million more on YouTube.

Actually, the way you've been dressing lately has gotten me curious ... and I realize that this sounds like an insult, but is somebody else dressing you these days?

Hahaha, what a preposterous (but intriguing!) notion! Nah, not at all. I simply realized that for years I was saying, "I love wearing suits and ties. I'd wear a suit and tie every day if I could," and then one day it hit me that, oh yeah, I guess I can. Part of it is living over here; I can find nice clothes that are small enough for me and not terribly expensive, which was next to impossible in the United Snakes.

Dude, your roommates all be leaving bananas and nuts in yo' bed, I would not be soo-prized to hear you wake up in the morning and Lada's left a dry-cleaned and pressed ensemble hanging over your door.

But yeah, I guess it makes just a tetch more sense for you to be just dressing differently. I do not think things through all that clearly. Anyway, it looks good on you, really.

I was turned on to Gainsbourg from those Mick Harvey tribute albums a few years back. Then I got the real stuff. I was surprised to hear how much of it had been sampled by other bands, like how many snippets I recognized without having known the original source, and how much I liked so very much of it. You have gone on a noble pilgrimage, rain be damned.

Since we're discussing your outfit, you look like the lead from La Maman et la putain

Mick Harvey tribute albums

Guh, what?! I got some Googling to do! ...And then right afterward I'll look up those albums on an internet search engine.

Is the knotted scarf something they make you where when you get a French Visa? Cause George Peppard wore one all the time too, but even when he was in America, and he was in the A-Team.

Scarves are indeed remarkably ubiquitous here, but not usually in the dandy-ish/homo-y style I've been rocking lately. This is a look I feel I can get away with in Paris but I think in Philly it would get me my teeth knocked in.

I imagine a date with Serge Gainsbourg might be a bit like this. (He's a recurring character on Kids in the Hall.)

PS that's awesome that you saw all that Serge related stuff. I'm a big fan.

FYI, the styling product of choice back then was beef tallow. People used to go so long without washing their hair, it would go rancid. Additionally, it was not unusual for creatures to set up house in the crazy coiffed hair.

And I was going to find you my favorite 1700's hairstyle picture of a lady with a boat in her hair, but my google search turned up nothing.

Also, it's funny to me t imagine you're not wearing a shirt under that scarf and velvet jacket. Which is green, non? Snappy!

Yesterday my boyfriend and I walked to the local cemetery and talked about where we want to be buried. I was deciding between next to Jean Cocteau, Tristan Tzara or Serge Gainsbourg.

Serge is looking a little crowded, but if it means anything to ya, Baudelaire has plenty of breathing room on either side. And a giant bat up above.

Serge's fans decorated his house that way. Then the neighbors painted over it, and Charlotte Gainsbourg was pissed! So I guess the fans re-painted it.

Two things, Mandingo:

First, hold your head high against CalamityJon's challenge to your sartorial awakening. By the end of this year, when my finances will be in much better shape, I'll be wearing suits for both work and pleasure. Listen to Whimsy, ignore Jon! :)

Second, your YouTube clip of Serge inspired me to track down a French song I've always meant to own: "Verlaine", by Charles Trenet. Thanks for the nudge.

Mm, Serge is very troubled and poignant, I like that in a Frenchman. However, I must confess that I am a Jacques Brel girl first and foremost.
