Suicide blond(e)

You think that's scary? Listen, kid, I've seen things that would make your hair turn very, very light yellow...

I'd like to point out that this "before" pic was taken right after I rolled out of bed this afternoon. I wake up with my hair looking like that about half the time, and the other half it's a total mess.

I hereby conclude my one-year (and then some) experiment with keeping my natural hair color. Whew. It's good to be back; before I started this experiment in December 2006, I hadn't seen my real hair color in a good six or seven years. I'd forgotten how hard it is to bleach all the natural redness out of my hair; this undertaking today involved three actual bleaching sessions, two bleach kits, three showers, and a total of about two hours with the decolorant in my hair, and it's still nowhere near as white as I was going for. I'll give my scalp a break and continue in a few days. Fortunately my individual hairs are super thick and don't break too easily from all the bleaching; two hours is way, way, way too long to leave harsh chemicals like this in your hair. You hear horror stories about people's hair breaking off completely after leaving the bleach in for an hour or so. I've been lucky so far. It's going to take a while to get used to being this blond again. I have to remember how to do the things that blonds are supposed to do, like be stupid and also sleep with everyone. I don't know which of those is going to be more difficult for me.

Red's the hardest color to dye, I've learned. It once took well over an our just to lighten one little shock of my bangs, even WITH heat applied to amp up the bleach.

I also dyed the underside of my hair jet black with permanent dye and it was 100% gone within a month.

I guess it's a blessing. We don't have to live with any oopsies very long.

When I first got all my loooong red headbanger hair cut off like six or seven years ago (did you even know me then?) my friend who was the stylist who did the actual deed told me the thing about red being the hardest color to remove, and boy was she right; it took us multiple tries with tons of professional-grade decolorant.

Sort of ironic since if you have actual red hair, getting any color to stick is a dirty bitch and a half!

I liked the red, but blond becomes you too! Both are pretty damn awesome. It's crazy how different you look in these two photos. Do you have any future plans to dye it crazy colors or are you sticking with the white-blonde?

Also, did you use toner? I'm guessing yes, since you seem to know what you're doing, but just in case... boyfriend before toner, boyfriend after toner. His hair is naturally a medium brown, but bleaches REALLY easily -- so maybe it's not a valid comparison. But still.

Whoa, I've been bleaching my hair for a million years but I've never used toner; I've been lucky enough in the past to get almost-white with just a bleach kit. Do you remember offhand what kind of toner he used? The results look great. I don't know anything about that process at all; any information or advice is much appreciated.

Not a clue -- just go to any hair salon type place where you can buy bleach and hair color and ask for toner, the kind that will remove the yellow from bleached hair. They'll know exactly what you're talking about. It usually is purplish in color.

Oh wait I lied! I just remembered: that particular time we used Special Effects Mixer/Toner. No clue if you can find that in France, though...

Yeah, it's a drag that I can't get Special Effects of Manic Panic brand bleach kits and toner and stuff like that while I'm in France. If I'd planned this out more carefully I would've asked someone back home to mail me all that stuff. But since this was spur of the moment, I'll make do with what I can find at Monoprix down the street. I'm off to hunt for toner now...

You know, last night I walked I passed a salon that sells every Special Effects color in production, and I thought to myself, dammit, I should've offered to buy some for Manning and send it to him. So yeah, I'd be totally happy to mail you as many bottles of Special Effects or Manic Panic as you'd like, in exchange for postage and the price of the dye. I need to go by there anyway to pick up some dye for Ed.

Oh yeah, and I'm not sure about crazy colors! I haven't done that in over three years, but I really miss it. For some reason I always prefer to have blond hair in the winter and colorful hair in the summer, so I'll wait and see how I'm feeling...

Nice.
++A tip:
before you try again, use a conditioner with protein, and a moisturizing conditioner (Aveda stuff is good) alternating for a few days, and that should make your hair breakage-proof. Note: with your length hair, you would only need about a quarter size amount. Usually a dime size amount, but your hair is going to absorb it like crazy due to the bleach. This will keep you with hair on your head ;)

Also, if you put the bleach on, and then put aluminum foil over that, and blow dry over the foil, it will speed up the processing. Like sitting under the dryers at a salon.

Also, toner is key to keeping the "whiteness" level that you want. If there is yellow in your hair that you want to get rid of, a platinum toner will help immensely.

I remember you telling me ages ago that you used to be a professional colorist, right? I should have thought to ask you for help! I'll see if I can find a good platinum toner tomorrow, but hunting down something that specific in a foreign language is always tricky for me...

Yes, I used to be a colorist, take a photo of the color you want when you go to look. ;) That way they won't accidentally give you green or something.

Also, before even using the toner, I would use a good conditioner, since sometimes after intense bleaching, hair can be "spotty". Absorbing different amounts in different places on the strand due to the dryness, and lack of protein in the hair strand. Conditioner (with protein) helps fill the hair strand with something to take the place of the melanin/protein that used to be there, It gives the new color something to "grab" onto so the color goes on evenly.

Protein conditioner is definitely a good thing, but only in small doses, alternated with moisturizing conditioner for a few days.

I seriously appreciate all this info! I totally would have conditioned my hair before I did all this bleaching today if I'd known that would keep it from breaking (but I've always been lucky and almost never had any breakage at all). I normally never condition my hair because I want it to be as straw-like as possible to help it stand up straight. But I'll definitely condition the hell out of it before I do the toner. Hopefully all of this will happen tomorrow morning if things work out. I'll post pics. Thanks again!

The first time I bleached my hair (to dye it blue) my hair didn't fall out right away. Rather, it waited a few months till I dyed it black and THEN started to fall out in terrifying clumps. Which is why now I get my hair professionally lightened...

Don't forget to giggle a lot and only date rich men. Stay tuned for more blonde tips!
